23 years before Benz....

Probably one of the very the first gasoline cars that ever hit the road is this Austrian made 1873 Marcus (www.VirtualVienna.net). According to several historical descriptions it is very hard to tell when Mr. Marcus drove his first car. You will encounter the years 1860, 1868, 1870 , 1873 and probably you can make a lifetime study of what was the exact moment and truth will be somewhere in the middle, but let's leave that to historians. Anyway he was first and whatever the speed was, whatever you may think of the bodywork design, when you were driving an open two seater in 1873 through the streets of Vienna in our view you had the right to pick any word: Speedster, Roadster, Supersports, Superleggera, whatever. Thank you Marcus! You did it ! (a bit of history on him here at www.ASME.org. (photo collection editor)
