5 December (UPDATE by Laurel Coo)

UPDATE: Contrary to our belief that Coke did invent the fatbellied Santa, Laurel Coo came up with this amendment:"I would like to inform you that this image predates the conception of the drink (1886). In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863) wrote the poem "The Night Before Christmas" (Blackdog.net), memorized by generations of children in which St. Nicholas is described as " ... chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf ... " Dr. Moore may have been a poet in his spare time, but he was also a Biblical Hebrew scholar, and a Professor of Classics at the General Theological Seminary (New York), and in my view, a reliable source!" Laurel, among many, many other things that you have done for this website, also thank you for this!
EARLIER TEXT: Today it is Sinterklaas' birthday that will be celebrated in The Netherlands. A tradition of centuries is that Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolas, the archbishop of Mira in Spain) will give presents to all children.
