A Plethora of Octagons

One of the most luxurious MG’s ever made must surely be the model WA, introduced by the end of 1938. Apart from basic sports cars, MG had always been making comfortable cars, but the WA became a class of its own. It was long, it was wide and it was heavy, but its 2.6 litre engine proved well up to the task. The spacious interior had all leather seats and the dashboard featured again the traditional octagonal instruments instead of the round ones on contemporary VA and SA models. A very nice detail on the elegant WA was the so-called dress-guard, an extension of the rear door that overlapped the rear wing, thus preventing your clothing getting dirty on drizzling days. Not many WA’s were made as production of the model was stopped in the autumn of 1939 for obvious reasons. Apart from saloon and tourer versions, there was also a Tickford Drophead Coupé. One of those will be offered by Coys during their auction at the MG Live festival at the Silverstone track on July 11th. Fancy yourself sitting behind a plethora of octagons? Then have a look at lot 233! (photos courtesy Coys)
