During the 1920s Raymond Mays became a well-respected driver specializing in hill climbs and sprint events (click!). Nowadays his name is mostly associated with the ERA single-seaters and his post-war involvement with the BRM racing car. It is less known that at the end of the 1930s he tried to capitalize on his ERA success by manufacturing a sports car that bore his name. The running gear of this Raymond Mays Special came from the Standard Motor Company, including a powerful 2.7 litre V8. Only five cars were built of which four were entered for the 1939 RAC Rally. They performed well, but the hand-built Raymond Mays Special never went into full-scale production, most likely caused by the outbreak of World War II. The car shown here is one of just two Raymond Mays Specials known to have survived. It was purchased by the Berkshire police in 1946 where it remained in service until 1954. Later it went to the USA, but it is now offered by H&H in their auction to be held on February 27. See lot 33 (click!). Whoever buys the Raymond Mays Special will be sure to obtain a "straight through" invitation for The Brooklands Double Twelve event on June 28-29. What more reason do you need?
