'A wave about to crash...'

This weekend the best answer (competition # 38) came from UK resident John Barringer, claiming: 1916 REO The Fifth. Now, we have one judge who is certain the car is a type 'The Fifth' (like on this illustration) and one judge who says it could very well be the 6 cylinder Model M. The only way to find out is to measure the wheelbase. As we can't do this we will say John's answer was the best one. Judge Bob was kind enough to scan and send this great brochure picture. "The curved radiator shell always reminded me of a wave about to crash on the beach." So now we will never forget how to recognise an early REO. For the non-American readers, REO stand for the initials of Ransom E. Olds who left Oldmobile to start a company of his own. We found a very little known piece of background on Mr. Olds by the writer Mrs. Judy Dixon (KudzuMonthly.com) (REO illustration: Bob Swanson collection )
