Always look deeper into an auction catalogue

Browsing an auction catalogue can bring surprises. The catalogue for the sale of the Richard C. Paine Collection is no different. During his lifetime Richard Paine had become a serious collector of motorcars and early motorcycles, so when part of his collection comes on the market you’ll know what to expect. Of course there’s a stunning Stutz and a marvellous Mercer (lots 838 en 840), but what about this oddity, the heavy duty Autocar Coal Truck dating from 1922. We love it when this kind of working vehicles is preserved. Also worth checking out is the collection of automobilia. We felt attracted to the assorted motoring advertisements shown here (lot 58), a series of cut-out pages from period magazines, some fringed by time, others framed and glazed.
