To be honest, Fons Alkemade had announced that he would come by yesterday to show his 'new' 1923 Charron. But we have heard more people say that they would drop by with their vintage vehicle on a Sunday afternoon... including your editor himself. However only one hour after his expected arrival time we heard a deep automotive sigh in front of the PWC premises. The exhausted little Berline had to be helped to climb the steep curb stone towards our garages. The car had produced funny ...(see also Read More)
UPDATE II by Dick Trenk:"In the US and UK (as well as most other places) the broken part is called a "Universal joint."
The word "Hardy" honors the name of some fellow who designed and made them in early years. In the US and UK the firm was known a "Hardy-Spicer" and their U-Joints were used by almost all manufacturers for drive shafts as well as for front drive axle shafts.
However the Hardy-Spicer type are plain cross type joints which accelerate and decelerate with each revolution and this cause vibrations in driving axles and other locations.
The cure was the introduction in 1928 of the Rzeppa type joint ( pronounced "cheppa") which is a "constant velocity" type joint used on front drive cars such as Cord, Citroen and modern cars having front wheel drive.
The CV joint is also used on higher cost rear drive and 4wd cars for their drive shaft to the rear differential. The CV joint equalizes the rotational speeds of the shaft, giving the car a smooth power transmisson and more reliability.
So......... please tell your readers this lovely old Charron needs a 6 hole cross type U-joint for the drive. "
(UPDATEs came in from Gerard Lansink and also from Chris Draper. Gerard advises to cut/saw the hardy from the side of a 12 ply truck tyre. Chris Draper mentions the firm Nettekoven in Germany (+49-22192152-0 in Köln) who makes the hardy's on command quickly and at moderate price.
