And now for some big game!

After yesterday's pheasant shooting this photo shows something really different. It was sent to us by Harit from India who tells us that the picture probably dates from the 1930s. The big cat seems to be a hunted down leopard, “artistically” draped over the bonnet of a Model A Ford. Usually in these hunting pictures we see royal cars like Rolls Royce’s, almost never something as mundane as a Ford Van. Harit continues: “In the old days only Maharajas and other Royalty were allowed to hunt. There was a form of conservation in place and in their times we never heard of reducing leopard and tiger numbers, though they did hunt quite a bit. Then came the Indian independence; the Maharajas lost their authority and every man had the democratic right to be equal and shoot big game. When their numbers became low, laws banning the hunt came into existence but too little too late. China also developed an appetite for tiger body parts. This is just one example of where things would have been better if Maharajas still had some authority in administration.” (text & photo Harit) (RB)
