Britains' first car auctioned december 2001

The first British car ever! A 1894 Santler with one cylinder 1 L Benz engine. In fact the car was on the road in 1889 already, but then steam-engined. Under British law of that time, which requested at least 3 persons to have command over the vehicle, this was no feasable option. In 1891/1892 a two cylinder engine was fitted, but this powersource was rejected also. The same happended to engine number three. In the late thirties the car was discovered again and in the 1950s fitted with the current Benz one-cylinder. Click the pic to have a look at the competition of those days (photo's Christie's Images Ltd. 2001).
