For some time troubles had been brewing for the Veteran Car Club of Great-Britain. Rumour has it that the Dating Panel, which is part of the VCC and responsible for identifying a veteran car, did have a mind of their own when it came to doing its job. And dating a veteran is important because if it is found that a motor car is manufactured before 31 December 1904, it will be eligible to enter the famous London to Brighton run each November. As a result there’s a huge price difference between cars made 1904 and earlier and cars manufactured after that date. We heard that recently the Dating Panel has been re-dating cars of their own accord and without consulting owners or other experts. In every case these cars have been re-dated younger. At their last meeting this action was deemed unacceptable by the VCC and as a consequence the Dating Panel has been dismissed. We tried to contact the VCC for further details, but without success.

UPDATE III by a source of stature that for personal reasons prefers his name not to be published: “...As fresh evidence came to light over the years the Committee/Panel did re-date cars, as we were required to do by the VCC, and the owners were involved in a dialogue with us when we had to take such action. In some cases the new evidence resulted in cars became 'older', and in others 'younger', but of course it is always the latter that are highlighted. We carried out our actions in the interests of historical accuracy - and nothing else.”
UPDATE II: The deposed Dating Panel have issued their own press release about the VCC’s decision. See also Read More for their side of the story.
UPDATE I: Martin Waller, who is the hon. press officer of the VCC informs us that: “…the Dating Panel reports to the Board of Veteran Car Services which has to comply with the latest Companies Act and have transparent governance in order that our Professional Indemnity insurance stands up to scrutiny. The past Dating Panel had not been adhering to these procedures.” And regarding the re-dating he states that: “This relates to personal issues between members of the Dating Panel and other members and associates of the Club.”
