Do check your local newspaper!

Our quiz about the Michel Irat was won by Aurelie Charlot. In her answer she also wrote that she was a 25 year old French girl with a 16.000 km Salmson. Naturally this made us very curious, so we just had to ask her for more details. She obliged us with the following story: “It is a 1939 Salmson S4-61 that was sold by Nadaud, the main Salmson dealer in Paris to a French ‘restaurateur’ named Roger Mary. At the outbreak of the Second World War Roger Mary drove the Salmson from Paris to Chateauroux (south of Paris) where he left it in the care of a ‘garagiste’. Roger Mary died during the war and the car remained in the garage. It was started every month from 1945 until 1994, the year the garagiste decided to retire! He advertised the Salmson in a local newspaper. It was bought by a friend who used it very little. Last year he sold it to me. The Salmson still has only 16.000 kilometres from new on the clock and is in perfect condition. I try to use it regularly, but I must keep in mind that I drive a “new” car and that I must preserve it.”
We need no further proof that it still pays to read your local newspaper carefully. You never know what might turn up! (RB)
