Rug tegen rug: Bentley Special of speciale Bentley?
We willen u niet te veel vermoeien met de eeuwenoude discussie over het ombouwen van oude auto's tot specials, maar het duo dat u hier ziet, roept toch weer een beetje de vraag op. Bonhams Auctioneers zal de twee verkopen tijdens de Goodwood Members' Meeting op 10 april en we moeten zeggen dat we de Bentley Sports Special, die ze een R-type 4½-Litre noemen (klopt dat wel?), er wel mooi vonden uitzien. Ja, hij staat geregistreerd als een auto uit 1953 en zou dus officieel niet eens op deze pagina mogen staan, maar we wilden hem toch opnemen, al was het alleen maar voor zijn uiterlijk uit de jaren 1930.
1953 Bentley R-Type 4½-Litre Sports Special
Let wel, deze auto wordt geleverd met een gloednieuw (kort) chassis en voorste dwarsbalk, evenals nieuwe spaakwielen en een aluminium carrosserie, dus we denken dat het mechaniek en de registratie de enige vintage zaken hier zullen zijn — de rest werd voltooid in 2021, en de auto heeft sindsdien slechts 10 mijl afgelegd. Van de verkoop tekst: "De prachtig bewerkte, op de R-Type gebaseerde special die hier wordt aangeboden, is het werk van de eigenaar, een zeer bekwame en ervaren ingenieur, wiens eerdere projecten onder meer het ombouwen van een Ferrari 250 GTE tot de veel begeerlijker 250 GT SWB omvatten." Ah! Dat is ervaring in het openen van blikken wormen...
Maar alle gekheid op een stokje, het ziet er goed uit. Geschat op een verkoop tussen £90.000 en £110.000, kan het nu relatief weinig zijn voor wat er inderdaad erg uitziet als een periode race special. Om de veilingmeester nogmaals te citeren: "De laatste decennia zijn de prijzen van echte Bentley's uit het Vintage-tijdperk gestegen tot een niveau dat ver buiten het bereik ligt van iedereen, behalve de allerrijksten."

1925 Bentley 3-Litre Open Tourer
Een andere Bentley die ze in dezelfde verkoop aanbieden is echter niet eens zo veel duurder. De Bentley 3-Litre Open Tourer uit 1925 wordt geschat op £140.000 tot £170.000. Hij is dan wel ooit omgebouwd tot een Vanden Plas-stijl tourer en gebruikt vermoedelijk een andere motor, maar hij komt een stuk dichter bij het echte werk. De geschiedenis van de auto lijkt ook interessant te zijn, met vroege logboeken en handgeschreven bladen van een eigenaar uit de jaren 1960; oudere MoT's en V5's beschikbaar. De auto werd in de jaren dertig gebruikt als brandweertender door Brooklands Aviation op Sywell Aerodrome, wat een geheel nieuwe betekenis geeft aan de modelaanduiding Bentley Brooklands...

One of my good College pals Father owned a 1930's Bentley 4½-Litre Sports! And oh my, that was special!! A car I still talk about and explain to anyone wanting to listen from my recall all these years back! Particularly even now sitting in my living room here in Alberta, Canada, the sounding note of the exhaust from the turning over the engine it seemed every second {yes, seemingly every second!}. So when I see this such car at shows it brings back sooo many wonderful memories. And the funny part is my College pals Father was a what was termed those many years ago a "rag and bone man". Or today termed a "recycle business owner"; obviously way ahead of his time. A superb guy to all us 14/15 year olds he gave rides to when picking up my pal from College. I'll never forget him!! And yes, this same type Bentley model is still occasionally seen at shows somewhere in Canada. To where I alone emigrated aged 18; now recently retired.

I agree with Joop. Bottom line, as with really ANY antique car purchase, is your interest, what you like, (That's really important) what you'll use it for, and tops, the FUN. Anyway, that is how I do it, how much bang for the buck.

A case of ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’ ? One is a period ‘ bitsa’ (Stanley Mann never minded!) and one a post war Bentley ‘special’ . They are what they are (horses for courses) so perhaps the debate is more about taking the ‘flowery lingo’ of the big auction houses with a ‘pinch of salt’. We know what they are and anybody that doesn’t do their homework when investing such large sums will surely know what they are buying.

I'm not decrying the workmanship or skill in building the special, as it's obviously well done. However why is the car registered as 1953, with an original chassis number and that registration number? It's got a new chassis so under DVLA rules it's basically a new car. The law, as it stands, also means that it can't be classed as MOT or VED (road tax) exempt, as it's been sustantially altered, and should probably have a Q plate registration.
If I had the space and money, unfortunately the garage is full, I'd take the 3 litre as the chassis number isn't far from one I used to drive.

Rather difficult choice. I love them both. But the 1953 car looks the part and if small dimentions and fast driving is your thing I would choose that one, but for the gorgeous 'original' looks of a real W.O. I would choose the 1925 car. Maybe enlarge my garage, rob a bank and buy them both :-)

The good thing about the so-called "R-Type Special" is that it is such an obvious fake that nobody will take it serious. I am just asking myself, who is so desperate to buy a car with "faux event stickers, further adding to the authentic feel" while there are loads of cheaper original prewar cars available allowing the owner to participate in real events? Of course, there might be a market for it like there is one for fake wristwatches, but I am not completely sure whether Prewarcar.com is well-advised to promote such creations.
