Drumming up the crowds

As the only person to have driven all three still-roadworthy Auto Union Silver Arrow cars in the possession of Audi Tradition, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason remarked with a sense of dry humor: “It looks like I’m acquiring a reputation far and wide as the most experienced Auto Union driver still around.” And he can enhance his reputation when tomorrow the Goodwood Festival of Speed opens its doors. Several marques will be celebrating their 100th anniversary: Morgan, Bugatti and of course Audi who will bring a veritable armada of racing cars to Goodwood. Particularly interesting for us will be the appearance of two pre-war racing cars: one the largely original 1938 Auto Union Type D driven by Nick Mason (click main picture). The other a reconstructed 1939 Auto Union Type D Dual Compressor, piloted by six-times Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx. (photos courtesy Audi AG).
