Elfreda and the Rolls

We don’t know who had more adventures: Elfreda or the Rolls she’s posing with. Elfreda was the daughter of a wealthy family living in the south of England. Father a retired military man, Mother a wildly eccentric female and Elfreda the product of this turbulent family. The Rolls is a Phantom 2 of March 1933 with body by Gurney Nutting. In the 1950s it found itself in Istanbul in Colonial service, but returned to England by road, with Corps Diplomatique plates and a very loud siren. But then came Hollywood! Outside Paris Vincente Minnelli was directing a remake of Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and wanted a role for the RR. However, the Coupe’s fixed roof posed innumerable lighting problems necessitating many indignities. One such cracked the exhaust swan neck over the rear axle causing a fire on the return trip, when the wooden body frame started to smoulder. Luckily the fire could be extinguished and normal motoring resumed. (text and photo Rick Ford)
