Faster than a speeding train

By David Grainger:
Every now and then a myth gathers so much steam it becomes commonly believed as the truth. Such was the case with a famous 1930 race between a Bentley motor car and a train, the Blue Train Express that ran between Cannes and Calais. Famous Bentley race driver and three-time Le Mans winner Captain Woolf Barnato (brooklandstrack.co.uk), who was heir to the Kimberly diamond mines fortune, accepted a bet that he could outpace the famous express train in a Bentley Speed Six. He not only beat the train to Calais, he boarded the British Channel ferry and continued on to London, arriving at his club a full four minutes before the train arrived in Calais, a testament to both Barnato and the wonderful cars of W.O. Bentley before Rolls-Royce PLC took over his company.
