Update by Hans Compter: "I don't think the cars are Renaults. They are, or at least the second car, is a british assembled 1905 model Clément Talbot. The photo of the first car is too blurred really for proper identification. Shortly after the time when this photo was taken the british Talbot company came out with their own in-house designed range of cars. I have eliminated the other two makes of cars which I first regarded as "probables" being Arrol-Johnston and C.G.V. (Charron). The only other make which remains as a "possible" is James & Browne but I do not have enough photos of those Hammersmith (London) made cars to fully eliminate them as well. I think Clément Talbot would be a safe bet."
EARLIER:Annette Copeman, press representative of Sheringham Corps of the Salvation Army (UK) wrote: "In 1905, General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army visited Sheringham in North Norfolk. It was an exciting occasion for the town and the picture shows him being driven up Station Road - this is now a one-way street, going the other way.
On September 6th 2005 the Salvation Army in Sheringham would like to celebrate the centenary of William Booth's visit. We would like to find a vintage car of a similar type to the one in the picture, with a driver of course; we have our own General Booth look-a-like!"
Well... before finding a similar car, let's first try to ID this one, isn't it? Please click the photo for more detail. Please let us know if you recognise the car. Or even better if you have such a car and would like to paticipate in the centenary. We think there is a strong similarity with this 1905 Renault (Filnet.fr). The second -following- car looks like this superb 1903 model in Australia (VCCANSW.org). Well, you are going to tell us probably: [email protected]
