Homesick Skirrow.

by Joe Gertler: "These British Skirrow race cars were built in 1936 to run on cinder oval tracks (www.vintagespeedway.homestead.com). Of the seven that were reported to have been built, either three or four were four-wheel drive (ed.: like this one) and the other were two-wheel drive. The body is all steel on a very massive frame with heavy suspension (four springs at each wheel). The engine is a special J.A. Prestwich (J.A.P., a British firm that built many motorcyles-and in light cars, also). The engine was made by combining two single cylinder 500 cc motorcycle racing engines onto one case. Thus the engine has two carburetors and two magnetos, and on the shaft side there is a double sprocket to drive the heavy chains to front, and the chain to the rear wheels. These cars ran in England, Australia (www.vintagespeedway.homestead.com), New Zealand and California. My hopes are that one day it will return to England and be shown (ed. and race) at Goodwood."
