This amazing Charabanc (click image for enlargement) was one of the displays at last year's Medway Festival of Steam and Transport. It’s a 1929 Leyland Lioness that was supplied new to the White Rose Motor Company in Jersey where it served until 1958. Every year the Medway Festival takes place at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham, an hour's drive east of London. This year the festival will be held during Easter on Sunday 8th and Monday April 9th. In keeping with a once major industrial complex located in the heart of ‘Aveling Country’, the Chatham Historic Dockyard Steam Society will have most of its traction engines out on show to represent probably the largest single collection of Aveling & Porter engines (steam-up.co.uk) in the UK. Although the show concentrates on steam locomotives and cranes, there will also be an exposition of buses and other transport vehicles. Whatever you fancy, it will be a perfect family day-out for Easter. (photo courtesy Chatham Historic Dockyard). (RB)
Update by Steve Gallichan: “I was interested to see the photo of the Leyland Lioness on your
web site today, however there seems to be some confusion about its origins. The vehicle pictured DM6228, a Leyland Lioness 6, was to the best of my knowledge one of six new Leylands supplied new to the White Rose Motor Company of Rhyl, North Wales, who were one of several small companies taken over by Crossville Motor Services Ltd. Its Crossville fleet number was 435, chassis 50261 & it was bodied by Burlingham. I believe the vehicle you are confusing it with was a Leyland PLC Lioness J8462, fleet number C15, chassis 45932, formerly the property of H.M.King George V. and used as a shooting brake. This vehicle was purchased by Jersey Motor Transport in June 1938 eventually being withdrawn in 1953 & sold back to Leyland Motors for preservation. Where is this vehicle now?”
