Italy is all about cars and food

And these two come together in Perugia, Italy. In the 1920s Chocolate king Giovanni Buitoni realized the promotional potential of car races. He initiated the Coppa della Perugina, held for the first time in 1924. At first Buitoni sponsored the races but due to lack of funds the last Coppa was held in 1927. Some twenty five years ago the Classic Car Club of Perugia reinstated the Coppa della Perugina, although today the event is not a race, it’s more about showing off one’s car and socializing. And take it from us: Italians know how to combine this with a good meal and a glass of wine. For 2009 the Coppa della Perugina joins forces with the Via Flaminia Tour, so you can now participate in both consecutive events. Perhaps they even will share a decent lump of their famous Perugian chocolate. (photos courtesy Bart Kleyn)
