Daimler Benz is not the kind of manufacturer that we tend to associate with malfunctioning machinery. Yet the Type 130 is not the best Benz ever produced. Far from that. Maybe conceived on a Monday morning? You will not hear us grumble about the missing hubcap. But how on earth could a designer of "Das Haus" come up with the idea to mount the gas tank right above the exhaust 50 years after the first Benz? The Swedish driver pictured here survived the fire... and lives to this day to tell the story. This we can't say for the car involved. On top of that it leaves us with a small problem. Just like an similar 130 Cabriolet that was discovered in East Germany years ago this one has the hinges in the front, opposed to the standard "Tourenwagen". Who can learn us more about this variety, is more than welcome to share his knowledge. (photo & info Johan Larsson, Sweden)
