More Giants. (UPDATES, see Read More)

In response to last weeks Giants Jon Baker of Australia writes:"The largest contraption I have seen "in the flesh" was a "Double Six" Daimler(www.Classics.com) fitted with fairly imposing coupe de ville bodywork which was reputed to weigh 3.25 tons. A more modest version of this model weighing in at 2.6 tons had its coachwork restored by Crailville Motors Ltd.. The earlier mentioned Bugatti Royale and V16 Cadillac as benchmarks of large production vehicles, only the prototype Royale had (at 14.7 litres) an engine larger than the Pierce Arrow "66". Subsequent Royales had a swept volume of "only" 12.7 litres, the Pierce at 13.5 litres with about 100 examples produced can be said to have won the volume race at the expense perhaps of exclusivity. Visit www.PopularMechanisc.com for a good picture and description of the "66" engine. The Cadillac V16 at 7.4 litres is shaded by the Marmon V16 at 8 litres and there is a good picture of one of these beasts at The Cussler Collection. (photo Crailville Coachwork Ltd.)
