More Sizaire & Naudin

Our recent mystery Sizaire & Naudin created such lively interest that we decided to show you some more. Bruno Estibals from France sends this picture of two Sizaire & Naudin cars. One is a ‘voiturette’, which used to belong to Maréchal Gallieni (firstworldwar.com), French hero from one of the big World War I battles. The other one was found in the seventies by Fritz Schlumpf (europeancarweb.com), but is no longer part of that collection. Of this car it is said that it participated in the 1904 Mont Ventoux Hill Climb, although the first Sizaire & Naudin came on the market in 1905. This car took part in many historic reruns like the 1985 edition of the Coupe Gordon Bennet. We have no experience ourselves, but several sources (one of them being S&Z owner Jim Kruse; photo with his wife at the wheel ) tell us that a Sizaire & Naudin is a wonderful car to drive. Besides a wooden chassis, it has a sliding column independent front suspension and a three speed rear end that incorporates one large crown gear and three pinion gears. These are moved in and out and side to side by shifting the entire drive shaft. The first models had a 918cc single-cylinder that runs with a distinctive noise, sounding something like plop-plop-plop. They have a very good taste for fuel which is swallowed in great gulps. The cars were known as one of the fastest single-cylinder cars in the world, having held the hour record at Brooklands averaging over 60 MPH for an hour straight. But a Sizaire & Naudin is not for driving only. We know of at least one happy owner who keeps his Sizaire & Naudin proudly on display in his living-room!
