This is Clark Gable showing off his mid thirties Packard (year/type?). It may be known to you that Mr. Gable owned more than one car in his life... Amidst many others he once owned a Jensen (see earlier PWC quiz). The photo in fact is only an illustration by the Jensen quiz update we received from Chrystopher J. Spicer (Australia):"I'm a Clark Gable biographer (Clark Gable, McFarland 2002). I can confirm for you that only one of the (edit.:Jensen) HL 131" chassis versions was known to have been powered by a Lincoln Zephyr engine and that was bought by an MGM producer named Buddy Lighton in 1938 or 39. However, I'm more interested to find out if any of your readers have come across the photos of Clark Gable posing with Morgan's Jensen-Ford in LA. Only three of these, essentially H series on a Ford chassis, were ever brought into the US plus the later HL-V12. Morgan's was black and Gable's silver with red interior but when they arrived Gable didn't like the color and wanted Morgan's but he wouldnt sell and gave Gable back his money instead. It was eventually painted black and sold to a Ted Wilcox. The third one was sold to a Russian actor named Mischa Auer. If anyone can help, they're welcome to contact me." UPDATES came in from Kim Koffman and Kit Foster. Kim:"The 1971 July-August issue of "Ford Life" magazine features a story about the Clark Gable, Jenson 1936 Ford. The article includes several photos. Gable never bought the car. Actress Faith Domergue bought the car. In 1971, the Jensen Ford was owned by Warren Wyman of Rancho Santa Fe, California."
Kit:"I would not characterize the Jensen-Ford as "essentially H series on a Ford chassis," but the information from Chrystopher Spicer is interesting. He should have my article on Jensen-Fords and the genesis of the S- and H-Types (Automobile Quarterly Vol. 36, No. 2)."
