Ever been to Elm street? They have some curiously talented mechanics down there. When surfing the search engines for info we found about every town in the US has an Elm street or Elm garage... But the most impressive place we stumbled into is the former Michigan Theatre (built in the twenties) in Detroit and now in use as a parking... However 'our' Elm sign came from Hudson, Mass. It is 30" x 48" ( 75 x 125 cm ) and was found by David Greenlees who would love to learn more about this handmade vintage sign.

UPDATE by Hugh Nutting: "The Nutting familly lived near Hudson MA at least since the Civil War. My dad's cousin was the Fire Chief in Berlin, a few miles away. Though I can't say much about this sign, my uncle lived a bit of history likely when this sign hung on a garage. His father was a good friend of the Stanley twins. I guess some of it rubbed off as my uncle became an apprentice mechanic in Boston right after WWI. I think I have seen Floyd Clymer collection photos of where he worked. The garage had such a good reputation that Henry Leland dropped in one day to see if they make a good Lincoln dealership. Folk art sign painting has a long history going back to the UK. Hope you get more info. One of our family members was a long time Hudson dealer near Hudson Mass, too. It became a AMC dealership in the mid-50s. Thanks for the post."
