UPDATE by Baron Lafitte de Montripier:
" I have to stress
that it is by no means the first drawing ever made of a differential. The
principle of that mecanism was known for a long time and its description can
be found in technical manuals much prior to 1894. It was invented and
patented in France by the famous mecanic Onesiphore Pecqueur, who died in
1852. I dont know the exact date of the patent but the "Musée des Arts et
Métiers" in Paris would certainly be in a position to provide details and
evidence. "
EARLIER TEXT:
Sorry, no ladies today. At least not very prominent. This is the floorboard of the 1894 Duryea that was to be seen at Pebble Beach two weeks ago. Look at the enlargement and you can clearly see a pencil drawing of a differential. The drawing is attributed to Frank Duryea himself and it's most likely the first drawing ever made of a differential. Now this is only one little piece of the history that's written all over this American automotive monument. Chances are that it will leave the US to a foreign buyer. Just because all those American museums just didn't know about the existence of this car that certainly is the most important carfind of this century. As we don't have the time to tell all those museums, we suggest that you do so. And let them write to us their motivation to obtain this gem. At least if you share the opinion of experts like Rick Carey. See his emotional statement in Read More (photo Giorgio Bracaglia)
