Update by Chris 'Salmson' Draper who expresses his doubts on the GP-car along the Amilcar on the b&w photo:"Do not think it is a Sunbeam - they had the Perrot brake shafts at the top not bottom of the brakes."
EARLIER: What you see here is not a quickly extinguished fire, in fact it's an early morning warming-up (!) of a C6 Amilcar. One of the meanest little machines ever to touch the road in the twenties. And it still is... The alloy covered straight six 1,1 liter (!) DOHC with Roots blower was about the hottest low displacement powerpack that money could buy. The one on show here gained an extra spicy character as it is one of two which were ordered by Argentinian driver Martin Alzaga Unzue, also known as "Macoco". See his photo and some in recent years collected odd facts at Brooklands.org. Glad we can add some juicy stuff. Like here at Tango Academy / TodoTango.com describing Alzaga as "The Last Argentinian Playboy" who inspired composer Cobian to the Tango song 'Shusheta'. Macoco's reputation 'deepens' when you read a few lines at Squawk.ca . With the smoky photo Glen Robb also sent an early photo of Macoco's C6 showing the car (probably when new in Paris) alongside a Grand Prix Sunbeam ...and an open driver Hispano in the background. It's the internet which brings all these teeny bits of history together. We are eager to learn more non web-based facts about Mr. Alzaga's racing career. Can any of our South-American friends add to the story? [email protected] (photo Glen Robb, Newsletter editor of the Amilcar/Salmson Register).
