No, don’t think that we are blasphemous. It was what Ian Murray, a Church of Scotland Minister, said when he first saw the interior of his recently purchased Rolls Royce. As daily transport Ian uses a 1926 Rolls 20hp, but also has several 20hp Rolls Royces in various states of disrepair. Recently he bought this rather sad 1933 20/25 Freestone and Webb Continental Saloon. The previous owner had the car restored in recent years complete with a mechanical rebuild and new upholstery in green leather. But after having travelled less than 200 miles, the vehicle burst into flames and was almost completely destroyed. Ian has dismantled the charred remains of the bodywork and quite clearly, the wiring loom appeared to have been patched over the years. Everything else on the car had been restored to a very high standard and lovingly maintained by the previous owner, so the wiring must have been the culprit. As both a Minister and a devotee of vintage cars, Ian reminds us of the story from the Gospel of Luke 11:39 ‘Jesus said unto them, Woe to you Pharisees who cleanse the outside of the cup (car?) but inside you are full of grasping and wickedness (dodgy wiring!)’ Perhaps a sobering reminder to us all... Amen! (text edited by Rutger Booy)
