Update by Kit Foster:" As strange as it may now seem, the combination hearse/ambulance
service was once quite common in USA, especially in smaller towns.
Ambulances, before the 1970s, were mostly "load 'em and haul 'em"
vehicles, made to ride softly and go fast. The mobile Intensive Care
Unit staffed with paramedics is a modern phenomenon. Ambulances
had much in common with hearses (both usually built on the
"professional" chassis of Cadillac, Packard, etc. and bodied by the
same specialist firms: Miller, Meteor, S&S, etc.) So a funeral director
would often run an ambulance service as a sideline. There were even
"combination cars," equipped to carry stretchers or coffins, as the
need required."
