Pipe show: de Parijse show van het Belgische merk steelt de show
Een paar jaar geleden lieten we je een bijzondere Pipe (uitgesproken als 'Piep') zien op de Salon de l'Automobile in Parijs in 1910. Laten we terugkeren naar het onderwerp met een andere foto van een pipe, genomen op dezelfde salon, maar dan een paar jaar eerder, in 1903.
Dat is nog eens een flitsende vertoning, net zo opvallend als de Moulin Rouge, denken we! Er is hier zeker veel te zien, balkons, zwevende daken, trappen, pilaren, gordijnen. Het zou ons niet verbazen als dat ding in het midden een draaiorgel was! En waar zijn de can-can dansers? Vreemd genoeg lijken er ook advertenties voor andere auto's te zijn: we zien borden voor De Dion-Bouton en ook voor Automobiles Gautier. Zijn de tentoongestelde auto's wel Pipes?
Ook interessant is de promotie voor wat de Britse agent van het bedrijf moet zijn, prominent op de gevel geschreven: “The London Motor Garage Ltd., 33-37, Wardour Street, Londres”. Naast Pipe waren ze ook dealer van Mercedes-Simplex, Magnet, Charron en Lanchester auto's, hebben we ontdekt - nog een eclectische mix van auto's die goed zou passen bij de uitbundige boudoirstijl van deze stand.

Les salons automobiles de Paris étaient tous d'un style "pompeux" au début du 20 ème siècle . Le constructeur automobile dont on voit la publicité est Hautier . On peut lire que Hautier fabriquait des automobiles et des canots à pétrole. De plus Hautier figure bien sur la liste officielle du salon : 3 véhicules etaient présentés : 6CV 12CV et 24CV. Gautier n'était pas présent au salon 1903.

We can read that Hautier manufactured automobiles and oil canoes. In addition, Hautier appears on the official list of the show: three vehicles were presented: 6CV, 12CV and 24CV. Gautier was not present at the 1903 salon.

That is not entirely true: there was a Gautier, not a maker of cars, but of 'freins à double effet' (double acting brakes) and 'direction irréversible' (irreversible steering). He occupied a (very small) stand on the second floor, on one of the balconies.

Yes, we see only Pipe cars, as the sign already indicates (the photo is from La France Automobile). If this stand was more eye-catching than those of the real big makes like Panhard & Levassor or De Dion-Bouton remains to be seen, but yes, everybody did his best to impress! If ever a time machine were available during my lifetime, it would be my fervent wish to roam one of these Paris Salons, or preferably all of them. That must have been a marvellous experience!
On the (here unreadable) left part of the sign the French agent was named, Auto-Stand in Paris, also present on the uploaded advertisement. The advertisement also indicates that Pipe was officially assigned by the Belgian AC to represent Belgium during the coming Gordon Bennett races. A real honour (and challenge) of course.
By the way, the car make in the background is Hautier, not Gautier.
