Geconserveerde Swallow is terug op de weg

Wanneer tegenwoordig een verloren gegane oude auto wordt opgegraven, is de vraag die onmiddellijk wordt gesteld: restaureren of conserveren? Meestal is een element van beide noodzakelijk, dus de vraag is waar de grens ligt. Natuurlijk, wanneer een auto ongewoon zeldzaam, origineel en historisch is, is het juiste antwoord vrijwel zeker het minimale te restaureren en de rest te behouden.

Deze Swallow-bodied 1931 Standard Big Nine is zeker zeldzaam. Slechts zes zijn er bekend. Zoals hij werd gevonden, was hij ook onmiskenbaar origineel, en liefhebbers zijn het erover eens dat hij het meest complete en correcte interieur had van de zes. Helaas was hij in een verschrikkelijke staat, en velen schreven hem af als niet meer te redden.

Gelukkig zag een enthousiasteling in dat hij van onschatbare waarde was als historisch referentiepunt en beloofde hij hem nieuw leven in te blazen. Vier jaar later rijdt de Standard Swallow rond alsof hij nooit van de weg is geweest. Er zal nog wat werk moeten worden verricht - de carrosserie zal moeten worden geverfd om hem voldoende tegen de elementen te beschermen - maar dit is precies het juiste evenwicht tussen restauratie en behoud.

Hij zal ook niet worden opgeborgen in noppenfolie; de eigenaar is van plan de auto te rijden zoals hij oorspronkelijk bedoeld was, ten voordele van iedereen die hem ziet. Zack Stiling vertelt hoe hij weer op de weg werd gezet in het meinummer van The Automobile, dat nu verkrijgbaar is.

Well done in getting this car back on the road. It must have been a struggle at times, but it's well worth it. These Swallow bodies are so attractive - for me they're so balanced; William Lyons was so talented. I used to drive an Austin Seven Swallow but I imagine these cars are way more practical! I look forward to seeing it out.

I had to paint the bonnet and wings, these are steel and had been covered with red oxide paint and had done nothing to protect the metalwork. I stripped back to bare metal and repainted.

The rest of the car is aluminium, the paint is too far gone and I will strip and repaint. I live by the sea, so a salty atmosphere, and the car will need all the protection it can get! I have found samples of the original "primrose yellow" and RAL 1000 is a very close match (as it can be - the passage of 93 years will have taken its toll) and I will repaint in the same way as it was done in the factory, i.e. primrose yellow all over the body with the black applied directly onto the same, no evidence of a black undercoat having been used, direct application onto the gloss paint!

I would not paint it to preserve it, but I would paint it with a clear varnish or just wipe it down with an oily rag.
