Frequent visitor John Barringer will be starring as personal chauffeur of King George V (bbc.co.uk) in a new UK tv-series next year. The issue came up when I asked him about a broochure I saw in Beaulieu lartely. John explains about his pristine Austin 20/4 Marlborough open drive Landaulet: "I have two of these in my garage. One is restored -the coachwork is factory original- and the other half restored. These cars are on the shorter 10 foot 10 inch wheelbase chassis although Austin did build a long wheelbase Landaulet on the 20/6 chassis but this had winding windows for the driver." When King George V suddenly died in 1936 , King Edward VIII came to the throne and his earlier ordered McLaughlin Buick (J.J. Wilder Antiques) arrived only weeks later. Another era, another car.
