Only some dreams come true... As a boy Wim Smit - son of a motorcycle and car importer/dealer in Holland - saw a car that caught his breath, but found his pockets were not deep enough. More than 35 years later by the end of a successful career as a Fiat and later a Volkswagen dealer, Wim again found a car that put a spell on him. Not a Rolls, not a Hispano nor a Packard... a 1928 Fiat 520 torpedo! Exactly the same car as the one that had kept him awake so many, many years back. He bought the remains of the torpedo plus the 520 Berlina donor car pictured here. The never restored Berlina offered vital 'organs' and invaluable information about the way these cars originally were built. The professional concours restoration by Arie van der Ham & team took nearly three years and the more than happy Wim decided to organise an event that can best be desribed as a full-pro car introduction. About one hundred guests - all the people involved with the restoration in one way or another - witnessed the rebirth of the sleek Fiat tourer (special guest from Italy was restorer Francisco Bonfanti ). Covered in a snow white veil the car arose from 'the tombs of time' and left the public speechless after that is was uncovered by dancing nymphs... (photos courtesy Italparts.com)
UPDATE: early this morning the news came in the car has been invited for the next Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este
