As a child I saw Clay Regazzoni racing on Zandvoort and he was one of my heroes. Last autumn I saw him in his wheelchair in pits of the Rempards in Angouleme, France. He was so much enjoying the vintage- and classic race cars and I explained my son (7) whom he was. My son went for an autograph, which was given with a smile. A few weeks later I read in the newspaper that he died in a weird car crash in Italy. Looking through my pictures of last years races in Angouleme and seeing these (often elderly) men in their cars, without all these safety features of the modern race car, I had to think of all these great names, racing in those prewar days for pride and glory and admired their courage and bravery. What a difference with all these so called stars in the F1 circus starting next month, who will drive their safety first machines around neat circuits with nearly the same speed as in the old days. These oldies were the real heroes, men like Clay Regazzoni. (text and photos Robert Vierbergen)
