Jim Merrick, who is the archivist of the Stanley Museum in Maine, is currently researching material for a book on the Ormond Beach, Florida, races of 1906. If all goes well the book will be published in January 2006. Jim came up with this picture of a proud Frances E. Stanley posing with driver Fred Marriott in the Stanley Rocket, the most aerodynamic racer of the day. During the races on Ormond Beach on January 26 1906, Fred Marriott and the Rocket burned the beach for a speed of 127.66 mph! It proved to be the longest standing steam Land Speed Record. Exactly one hundred years later the Stanley Museum will celebrate this record during the Centennial Event to be held from January 22 until January 27. All vintage steam cars, and gas and electric race cars pre-1912, are invited. (photos courtesy Jim Merrick).
