David Greenlees mailed us this photo (click for larger version) of a Locomobile winning the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Races: “This is one of the most important moments in American racing as the Vanderbilt Cup Races were one of the most famous races in the world and up to this point had only been won by foreign automobiles. This Locomobile was one of two built in 1906. They ran very well in that year’s Cup but did not have quick detachable tires like the competition had. It slowed their progress although they set the fastest lap speed. Locomobile came back in the next running in 1908 and became the first American automobile to win the race with George Robinson driving.”
