Towing the Tow (see UPDATE)

This odd combination belongs to Hans Kirpestein from Holland. His 1937 Buick Special Opera Coupe has in tow a 1938 Indian Dispatch-Tow. In the 1930s the Indian Motorcycle Company targeted these Dispatch-Tows especially at automobile dealers and garages. By using the Dispatch-Tow one mechanic was able to drive to the customer’s home and service the car on the driveway or, if necessary, take it back to the garage. In that case the Dispatch-Tow (ziggysmotorworks.com) was clamped to the car’s rear bumper by means of a tow bar. Hans has been using his combination of Buick and Indian for seven years now and has never seen a similar one. (RB)

UPDATE by Hugh Nutting: “(in the USA) these combinations were still a common sight well into the 1960s. The three-wheel bikes were also used by auto rental companies and some dealers to deliver cars around the city as needed.”
