Watch out! She’s dangerous!
(see UPDATE)

This is not just any ordinary girl. Her name is Ethyl. She’s in the advertising business. Looking sweet and lovely she tries to lure us into becoming addicts of a very dangerous drug: leaded fuel! Her innocent face appeared on the fuel cans that were used to sell Pratt’s gasoline. Shell was wiser: their fuel cans they tried to warn us off with a text not unlike on today’s cigarette packs. (pictures and text: Bas fuel can de Voogd). (RB)

Update by Hugh Nutting: "Ethyl is a development of Charles (Boss) Kettering, VP and Research Director of General Motors. Ethyl added lead to fuel and gave it more power plus longer valve life. Today it is better to rebuild antique prewar engines with hard valves and seats since Ethyl is no longer in use."
