This fantastic postcard comes from the collection of Nico Claerhout from Belgium. The travelling party is pictured in front of the travel agency “Union” at Unter den Linden 22 in Berlin, which incidentally is just a stone’s-throw away from the Mercedes Showroom. But where did this group come from? All the way from Belgium by bus? We certainly don’t hope so; weather and dusty roads would have made the trip very uncomfortable. We suspect they are about to set off on a sightseeing tour around the city or perhaps to Potsdam to visit Sanssouci. From two passengers we know the names because they are written on the back. XX is mr. Latouders and X is Maurice Wanson, who lived in Brussels and was probably involved with aviation and early motor racing. Can anyone shed some more light on either of these gentlemen? And of course we are curious to know what kind of bus this is? (RB)
Update III by Kim Koffman: “The sightseeing vehicles were referred to as motor coaches. The standard sightseeing tours made a two and half hour circular drive at a price of 5M. The day trip to Potsdam by motor coach & motor-boat cost 12.50M. Notice that three of the men are holding canes.
Update II by Bas de Voogd who suggests that entry to the charabanc went via some sort of platform like the trainstation.
Update I by Tim Bailye: “Unfortunately I have no information to contribute, however I was amused looking at the picture trying to imagine what a procedure it must have been to embark/disembark the passengers. Step ladders perhaps? I would also question the efficiency of the stepped seating arrangement with headwear (click!) such as that of the woman in the front row! One would also hope that the routes chosen were very smooth. It is not hard to imagine the outer passengers being pitched headlong over the side! A classic photo!”
