We think these three sailors (click pic for enlargement!) on shore leave are having a great day out. But we also suspect they already had a few pints when they decided to have their photo taken. The photograph was certainly taken in a studio, just look at the painted tree in the background and probably dates from around 1910, when it was still a novelty to sit in an automobile. The pic was send to us by Stein Tranvik from Norway, who would like to find out what make this early car is. It could be that the back seats have been added for photo studio use, but according to Stein one thing is sure: the car is not made in Norway, although the photo is most likely taken there. Update III again by Kit Foster: "I found a good photo of a Model A Ford with a removable tonneau. It differs in detail from the photo car in today's item. The
Ford and the Cadillac tonneaus notch into the car body, not lap over it
like the photo. I've been looking at other early makes (rear-entrance
tonneaus disappeared by 1910) and haven't found a match yet."
Update II by Kit Foster: “It’s not a photo prop, just an ordinary removable tonneau, quite
common in these parts. It could be a Model A Ford (but not a Model C, nor a Cadillac).”
Update I by Mark Dawber: “The car appears to have a removable rear tonneau as found on 1903-4 Cadillacs - and no doubt many other makes too. This isn't a Cadillac though because the controls under the steering wheel don't match with pictures in 80 Years of Cadillac LaSalle.
