This unusual construction is a French Elfe Cycle Car. It is based on a sheet-metal chassis with a cable-operated pivoting front axle sprung by coil springs. The rear axle is located by links and sprung with cantilever springs. The 20-degree Anzani air-cooled engine is cooled by a belt-driven fan.

Given the racing number, the car is obviously presented as the Anzani-powered Elfe cycle car used by its creator (and initiator of the Bol d'Or) Eugene Mauve at the course de côte de Gaillon, 2 October 1921 http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b530732380

However there are important variations in the wheels, chassis and fittings. Are we looking at a 21st-century recreation of the car, perhaps powered by the correct style of 20-degree air-cooled Anzani twin, and "distressed" to make it look like a real PWC?

Elfe Cyclecar, built by Eugene Mauve at Vierzon in France. Sheet metal chassis, cable operated pivoting front axle with coil springs. Rear axle sprung with cantilever springs. 20° V-twin Anzani 2VT4 engine with 75 mm bore and 124 mm stroke. Also built as a pillion type passenger 2 seater. Elfe's first racing appearance was at the 1920 Cyclecar Grand Prix at Le Mans. In 1922 Mauve organised the first version of the Bol d'Or 24 hours race for cyclecars and motorcycles. In 1923 production started of a more conventional car bearing his name, but not more succesful than the precedecessors.

This single seated Elfe racer, made in Levallois, based on a sheet metal chassis with a cable operated pivoting front axle with coil springs. At the back a 20 degree Anzani air cooled engine of 984cc which is cooled by a belt driven fan, and a motorcycle gearbox. It participated in the 1921 Gaillon Hill Climbe. It was built by Eugene Mauve, initiator of the first Bol d’Or race for motorcycles and cyclecars in 1922 in which Genault finished 5th with an Elfe. Road legal Elfe’s had tandem seat lay-outs with horse-saddles as seats and had 704cc two-stroke Vapor v-twins.

Although the pictured Elfe cannot fly, its unusual pulley/cable steering is reminiscent of aviation. With only an authentic 1100cc Anzani V-twin engine, a gearbox and wheels, Cyrille Verchambre, Marc Ménager and Pascal Zela of Ateliers des Pionniers (Gallardon) heavily relied on period photography to rebuild this 1920/1921 sports cyclecar. New materials were artificially aged. Original Elfes were produced between 1919 and 1923 by Ateliers Defrance Frères (Vierzon), co-owned by Eugène Mauve, founder of the Bol d’Or. Sports versions commonly participated in French cyclecar races. With racing number 72, Mauve took 5th place in the 1921 Côte de Gaillon flying-kilometre trial.

Dear PreWarCar-team,

here the solution from the Nahe-valley

"Elfe" Cycle Car, built by Ateliers Defrance Frères in Vierzon between 1919 and 1922.
Available as single-seater and tandem-two-seater. Aircooled 20°-V2-Anzani-engine with 1.100cc (some say 703cc, others 984cc), using a motorcycle-gearbox, a multi-plate-clutch and a chain-drive. The constructeur Eugène Mauve was sportive, his cars raced in the 1920 Cyclecar Grand Prix at Le Mans, one Elfe finished fourth. In 1921 Mauve competed in the Grand Prix at Provins and crashed, in the Cyclecar Grand Prix at Le Mans Mauve didn’t finish. In the 1922 Cyclecar Grand Prix Elfes were driven by Colognes and Dayot.
In 1922 Mauve founded "Cyclecars Mauve".

This is the reconstruction of a 1921 Elfe racing cyclecar. It was built by the museum L'atelier des Pionniers of Galardon around the original Anzani V-twin engine, which they had in storage. The original car, a one-off, was built by Eugene Mauve at Vierzon. It took part in the 1921 Gaillon hillclimb. The car was built on a sheet-metal chassis with a cable-operated pivoting front axle. While the stock front-engined Elfe cyclecars were built from 1919 to 1922, the mid-engined racers first appeared as two-seaters in tandem formation in the 1920 Cyclecar Grand Prix at Le Mans.

This is an Elfe racing-bodied cycle car. The photo may have been taken at Le Mans, as one of the firm's cars competed there in the 1920 Cyclecar Grand Prix - probably powered by an air-cooled Anzani engine - although the company began building its own engines around then too. Not for long though ...apparently the company was would up a year later. The car's steering was operated by cables (as can be seen in your photo) and drive was by chain and sprocket to the rear axle. There were two Elfes entered for the 1922 Cyclecar Grand Prix.

Cantilever rear springs. The 20-degree Anzani air-cooled engine with belt driven fan. Mauve raced Elfes and later built a more conventional car, the Mauve. He also organized the first Bol d’Or 24 hour race. There had been an Elfe for sale previously in PWCs.

The ELFE was designed by Eugene Mauve and manufactured in Lavallois from 1919 until 1922 by Ateliers Defrance Freres. The car pictured is the second model from 1920, powered by an air-cooled Anzani 1036cc V-twin. In the August 1920, Le Mans Grand Prix de L’U.M.F. (273.6 Km,16 laps of 17.1Km), cars no. 1 & 2, both ELFE-Anzani, were driven by Andre Rousseau and Mauve. Neither finished. In 1922, Mauve founded the Bol D’or 24-hour race for vehicles less than 1100cc capacity with solo drivers. Other ELFE cars had a front-mounted, water-cooled Anzani V-twin and motorcycle gearbox with reverse.

This is an Elfe Cyclecar of 1921 constructed by Eugene Mauve and used a V-twin Anzani.

It is possible that the photo shown is an excellent replica of the car as raced at the Gallion hill climb.

This photo of an Elfe Cycle Car was made at the 1921 Gaillon Hill Climb race meeting. The car was built by Eugene Mauve (on the photo) at Vierzon in France.
It has a sheet-metal chassis with a cable-operated pivoting front axle sprung by coil springs. The rear axle is located by links and sprung with cantilever springs. The 20-degree Anzani air-cooled engine is cooled by a belt-driven fan. It had a motorcycle gearbox, a multi-plate clutch and a chain which took the drive to the rear axle. The V-twin Arzani engine had a capacity of 703cc or 984cc.

This is a replica of the 1921 ELFE cyclecar, Eugène Mauve / french made, here in a "mono" version built for the Guaillon hillclimb race.
Made on sheet metal chassis, and a beautiful V 2 cylinders at 20degree, 1100cc, water-cooled Anzani engine.
The idea of E. Mauve (who create the famous "Bol d'Or" race) was to enter the period cyclecars Grand Prix.
There were also some 2 seats in-line versions.
You can see this replica at Musée Atelier des Pionniers in Bailleau-Armenonville/France.

Elfe cyclecar with V-twin Anzani, photographed at the Gaillon hill climb, near Rouen, in October 1921. The intrepid driver is Eugene Mauve, founder of the Bol d’Or and chief engineer for Ateliers Defrance Freres, who built Elfe cyclecars in Vierzon. Earlier in 1921, in the cyclecar Grand Prix at Provins, Mauve hit a tree at about 70 mph on the first lap. If he incorporated any safety features following the crash, they are not evident in this photo. His long wheelbase, tandem 2-seaters look even more terrifying. From 1922 to 1924, Mauve built cyclecars in Levallois-Perret under his own name.
