With vintage motoring, too many breakdowns are caused not by defective parts but by poor-quality modern replacement ones. This is especially true for electrical components, so it's reassuring to know that there are businesses run by enthusiasts which go out of their way to supply parts they can vouch for. Jenny Brown comes from a family of enthusiasts (her father Graham and brothers Michael and Tim run Vintage & Classic Shock Absorbers) and provides a great service to our hobby through JB Vintage Spares, supplier of ignition components, bulbs and other electrical parts for historic vehicles.

Here, Jenny introduces us to the different bulbs available and their various applications

Headlight bulbs

Cap Size 15mm

Options available

• Single Filament SBC (Twin Contact BA15d) and SCC (Single Contact BA15s)
• Twin fimanent SBC (Twin Contact BA15d)

Stop tail bulbs, rear and brake light

Twin filament and twin contact BA15d

Available with either equal or offset pins

Sidelight bulbs

Single filament BA15s with a 15mm diameter cap

Equal Pin

Sidelight bulbs or indicator bulbs

Festoon Bulbs

Used in semiphore arms and trafficators

Also used in interior lights, dashboards and Marchal headlamps

Available in a variety of different lengths and diameters

Marchal three-pin bulbs 

As fitted to Marchal lamps, often fitted to Bugatti, Amilcar, Citroën vintage and classic cars.

BPF or British Pre-Focus Bulbs

As fitted to many classic cars and motorbikes during the 1940s to the 1960s

Cap diameter 20mm with two tags. Cap BA20s BA20d
