Should we ban the 2007 Jeluli from this website? We received an e-mail from Geoff Uren asking if we should keep replica's out of PreWarCar's for sale section. This is what we answered plus a few more lines:
As you say, it is a lookalike, but it is clearly marked & described. We must stress this is a very complicated area and a long time back we have decided to let anybody in who is absolutely open in what he is selling. When you would be in the editor's chair you would know how many cars are somewhere in the gray zone. Should we ban all those? Should we ban all Specials? Or only the Specials created after 1945? Should we ban American Hotrods built after 1945? Or only the hotrods with postwar parts inside? Should we ban Bugatti's that have more than 50% newly made parts? Should we ban brandnew Model T speedsters with nothing old in/on it? Should we ban newly built prewar Jeeps? (there is a factory in France) Our position is that we allow anybody who is open about his prewar car. And we make many mistakes, but you are warned. We are not buying, you are. Now that we are talking, the detailing of the Honda V-twin powered Morgan replica from Argentina has some nice vintage details. Made with dedication and craftmanship in Buenos Aires. Even the Lucas vacuum wiper unit! The maker claims he probably is the only one in the world to produce these units new... Now here we come to the bottomline of all this. If we would ban every car that is a replica or a lookalike, every car with a question mark, you could easily get the idea that all cars on this website are fully original. Now you must agree that it is impossibe for us to know based on digital photos and e-mail descriptions. Now who is going to judge all this when you know that the newest of all original prewars is 67 years of age? Better keep an open eye for all what's on the market. Keeps you awake.
