You can’t ride around in your money

Probably many of us still wish they had their first car. Frank Hartmaier from Pennsylvania must never have had this regret because he kept his 1929 Ford Model A Roadster for 80 years! At age 17, he bought it on May 16, 1929 from a local dealer. With the optional spare tire and rumble seat, the price was 560 dollars. Over the years the Ford served him faithfully, although its true mileage is unknown as the odometer quit several years ago after registering over 400,000 miles. Frank had the Model A restored on three separate occasions, but always repainted the Ford in its original hue of rose beige. Frank wouldn’t dream of selling it, saying: “You can only put money in the bank; you can’t ride around in that on a nice day and get an ice cream cone.” As had been Frank’s intention, after his death in January 2009 his Model A was presented to the Antique Auto Museum at Hershey. Eighty years of ownership… could this be a record? (With thanks to the AACA museum)
