Züst overtaking De Dion Bouton,
Japan, May 1908...!

The amazing photos we show you today, are snapshots made by the De Dion Bouton team during the great race New-York Paris 1908 (see The Route ). These photo snippets are the silent witnesses of a dramatic episode of the race which made the French factory decide to withdraw their entry. Japan in that time was not very motorcar friendly. The steep hills gave passes with impossible hairpins (note the Nippon flag !). The bamboo(?) bridges may have been perfectly suited for local needs, not so for three ton intercontinental racing machinery. Anyway, this is another era, another century which is easily seen on the next photo of a busy village street near Fuji Jama (mount Fuji) .
(French notes at the back of the photos told us the second car is a Züst; collection Stijnus Schotte / De Autostal )
