Featured in the automobilia section of H&H's sale of 21 July you will find this well used Bulova watch which is said to have been owned by Tazio Nuvolari himself. His name evokes more movement and sound than a thousand clocks can give. The first thing that came to our mind is in which phase of life Nuvolari was using it. It does not look very prewar but also not very modern. So yesterday we checked with Bulova (New York 1875), but so far they are not sure either. "Somewhere between the mid 1930's and the very early 1950's." That's what we thought and Tazio died in 1953, so that fits. Now the next thing is that the watch reputedly was a gift by his friend, admirer, poet and novellist Gabriele D' Annunzio. Gabriele died in 1938 so one could say 'case closed', the watch came to Tazio between the 'mid thirties' and March 1938. Still we hope there are one or two watch experts amongst you. People with old catalogues maybe. Or people who know more about the watch in connection with Tazio. Or people who can say when and at which occasion Gabriele gave it to him. UPDATE by Jim Duncan: Here is a dating chart(click) for
pre-war watches, and also a note on what they used after the war.
Chart is courtesy of NAWCC message board.
I notice H&H only say it "reputedly" belonged to Nuvolari. No provenance then.
Editor: Maybe D'Annunzio did not look at motorsport as a true sport. About the friendship is a lot to be found on the web, but this may not be accurate as well.
