Before the cars, horses were all over the place. So the competition race and horses were less attractive. Luckily there were still people with horses and they want to show their price. Enclosed is a picture, taken in 1924 of the rider Sylvia Spooner (19 at that moment). She was described as "fearless" and well known for jumping obstacles. Her father ran "Spooners Harriers" at Yelverton, Devon, which today survived as Spooners and West Dartmoor Hunt. More interestingly she was one of many mistresses of the Prince of Wales, later Edward V111. She remained unmarried saying "once you've had the best . . . " and told her friends "stay single, you'll have more fun." Obviously a great character. At 20 she became Lady MFH and then moved to Taunton near me with the Taunton Vale hunt.
In this phote she was definitely fearless, using her 1 horsepower to literally overtake the many hp-car.
But what car is it? Please let us know in a comment.

Hi David, I agree with you that there are features which are uncommon to Delage. For all of these features there is however evidence that they were once used on a Delage. If you would look at a Sunbeam from the same angle, you would notice the difference in curve of the bonnet and radiator. Further, I couldn't find any Sunbeam with a similar bonnet grip at the same location. Also the extra vertical dividing line behind the bonnet, suggesting the presence of a scuttle tank, is absent in all Sunbeam bodies. In addition the quadrant on the steering wheel (as mentioned by Peter Ransom), full circle for Sunbeam and half circle for Delage, supports the latter one. In case of a Sunbeam the mudguards would have had an unusual shape too, as most touring models had the typical British mudguards following the wheel and ending in an almost square angle with the running board.
Do not misunderstand me, I would be perfectly allright if it is not a Delage. A car on the other hand is not what we want it to be, but what it is. So maybe the conclusion is that we cannot be fully sure yet?

If it was a 6 cylinder Delage of 1914 it would be a Type AK or BK, and they did not look anything like the car in the picture. If it was to be a six cylinder Delage it could be a CO from 1916-1921 which seems more likely. But even then the coachwork and particularly the bonnet doesn't look Delage to me.
I'm inclining towards Sunbeam.

I'd go with 1912 25/30 Sunbeam. While there are always exceptions to the rule, the big Sunbeams of later years had a sloping bonnet line and only three or four bonnet louvers. The sliding door handles, very small Spark/throttle quadrant,the style of windscreen mounting, radiator shape, the shape of the running board mounts and the presence - on the driver's side - of the fuel filter just behind the rear r/board mount all say Sunbeam to me.

Further to support #6, it has a scuttle tank, four spoke steering wheel with quadrant and brake drum bolts on the rear wheels.

I don't like to disagree with A.B., but Delage bonnet louvres during that period tended to be longer and finish very nearly up at the hinge. The wings don't look very Delage of that period either.
(But I could be wrong!)

Well, let's throw in another possibility. Personally I have no doubt that this is a 1914 6 cylinder Delage. The pointy radiator and the long bonnet with hand grip aside the louvres are obvious clues. Although not specific Delage, the three-quarter scroll-elliptic springs are a further confirmation.

Well i thought the car looked like a Cadillac, appears to have a cross spring joining the other springs at the rear, V57 perhaps ?

My guess is that this fine touring car is a 25-30hp 6-cylinder Sunbeam of 1914-15.

My guess is that it is a 24 hp Sunbeam, which had very long bonnets. My major doubts stem from the bonnet fluting, which seem to have wider flutes than Sunbeam normally fitted at this period.
