Sadly i am having to sell on my Bentley special ( Icarus). It is currently a work in progress and still needs finalising/ refining. A great opportunity to be able to buy a cheaper Derby special to finish with your own touch.
Details on the car:
The car was originally built by well known Bentley special builder and professional engineer R.J. Burrell ( Mentioned in the Bentley specials book, mostly known from his fabulous Rolls V12 Derby special and known for his mechanical innovations and improvements as well as known for his considerable success achieved in club racing)
It started life as a THRUPP MABERLY 4d touring saloon back in 1936, with the first owner being Cmdr. M . Edwart Wentworth. There's alot of history of Edwart and his family, also known with driving WO Bentleys at the time. Some great history details during the second world war he commanded a Destroyer, HMS Icarus. Which the name has now been given to this Bentley.
Bob built this as tribute to the famous Bentley racer Eddie Hall, It is a light weight steel frame construction skinned in handmade aluminium panels. It has an opening hinged bootlid for extra storage, it has a rear touring seat for a rear passenger. Cycle wings and body finished in Bobs famous shade of Grey similar to battleship grey. It has a pair of lovely delicate Marchal Headlamps and High intensity rear lights. It has a pair of aero screens and centre rear view mirror fitted. A lovely reconditioned steering wheel is currently on the car. Modern stop start battery with high cranking power. Radiator core is very good.
The dashboard is custom aluminium, engine turned. Consisting of the essential instruments and dash accessories. Ign switch, Starter button, Ign light, Horn button, 2x dash lights, interior dash light switch, Oil pressure gauge, water temp gauge, voltage gauge, clock from a ww2 plane, Bentley speedo, Smiths rev counter, gradient gauge and then finally has provisions for a fuel gauge but not yet fitted.
Engine: It is a 4-1/4 Derby engine tricked up with a Fiennes aluminium head (now readily available around £12000)
Billet fabricated block, one of only 4 Bob had specially made. Fitted now with extra cooling provisions to the rear cylinders.
Correlo Con-rods with thinwall Big ends and modern pistons
New made flywheel
Original twin SU carbs, rebuilt
It has a WOSP High torque Starter motor fitted.
New twin su fuel pumps and all new ignition components and fresh oil and coolant.
It would need to be noted that it is currently working with a modern alternator adapted to fit but comes with original dynamo and wiring provisions are also there for the dynamo if it was wished to be used.
It's truly a very special car, i'd imagine to build the engine alone would cost £40,000 plus. Starts first turn even in this very cold weather we have had recently. It would make a very successful VSCC race car or a reliable touring car. Even for rallies would do great! All eligible!
As I say as of now it is not yet finished, i am currently still fitting the following:
Bonnet straps. I have an Icarus mascot I'm getting machined to fit onto the radcap to suit the name of the Bentley. Eventually i would have liked to get a carpet set made, along with interior panels and a rear seat made up, along with a duck cover for the rear seat area and a front tonneau cover.
Rare opportunity to buy a special Bentley. In an ideal world I would never sell her! But sadly needs must. Please forgive me for the lack of photos, if needed more photos can be taken please just ask.
The car and I are based in the UK. Delivery and dealing within Europe is welcome and not a problem. Thankyou for reading this far! Get in touch with any enquiries. Many thanks, George.
