Here is one of the true greats of the golden age: a Delahaye 135S, the top-tier competition variant of the chassis, dressed in coachwork by Vanden Plas of Brussels. This particular car, No. 47473, is a race chassis rebody in drop-top coupe form that runs and drives today, its rebuilt engine backed by original gauges that still read true.
Rebodying a retired competition chassis like this was standard practice for Delahaye owners of the era — chassis went to independent coachbuilders to be clothed to order, once a race chassis was no longer competitive it was common to give it a second life as an elegant road car. This practice only grew more common after the war, steep French taxes on large-engined cars made rebodying an existing chassis far more practical than buying new.
The car presents beautifully: paintwork on both body and undercarriage is as-new, and the original chrome is largely intact, with only a handful of accessory hardware pieces recommended for rechroming. The interior upholstery has already been finished and is ready to install, and the original, complete framework for the convertible top survives with the car — the top itself is the one remaining piece of the puzzle, needing only to be finished.
This incredibly rare, original example is ready for its next chapter. The current owner is looking for a quick cash sale, though trades will be considered in addition to cash.
