1937 AC 16/70 4 seat Sports Tourer

Almost certainly chassis number L542 is the most original  AC 16/70  4 seat sports tourer surviving. Only 2 private owners from new. Delivered in July 1937 to Mr. J.D. Whitley of Greenall Whitley Brewery, Warrington.  Bought by Cat and Lion Garage, Stretton by Warrington in about 1980. The garage sold it to Tim Armitage in 1981. Owned by the original buyer for about 44 years and by the present family for 45 years.

The car is in irreplaceable, unrestored condition having been conserved to retain the charming character and mellow patinated appearance. A car which has never been dismantled and rebuilt is a special pleasure to drive.  Most of the paint is original and is, in part, polished through to the aluminium. The leather is original except for the front seat squabs. The carpets are scruffy and the hood & side screens are present but never used in present ownership. The original engine is still in use but a new block bought in 1985 is waiting to be utilised in the future. During the late 1980's the bottom end of the engine was rebuilt by Ron Footitt & Terry Rogers , the top end by Paul Jaye. The car still drives well.

This much loved AC is Ideal for an owner who favours originality but would also make the perfect basis for a concours  restoration .
