A beautiful but unknown Lady

Jeremy Greene sent us the following message:

“You have or had a yellow Straker Squire 6 tourer listed sometime last year. I am not interested in purchasing the car, but I would like any info you might know about the mascot on its radiator, as I have a similar mascot.

I purchased my mascot at auction some years ago, not knowing its history. It is not inscribed. At the time of purchase, it had what appeared to be an early narrow veteran radiator cap with an external thread, and a thick spacer that would have had it sitting quite high above the spout. I removed all that and have it sitting with the top of the town cap recessed into its wide base. Its base is unusual in that it is an irregular shape for mounting. I have it on a vintage radiator now. I suspect it was not a Straker Squire standard fitting. Maybe Terry Parker who wrote an article on the cars that went to Australia might be able to add something. Any info would be gratefully received, thank you.”

Please comment below if you can tell Jeremy more about this beautiful lady on his radiator.

I'll comment my opinion regarding Terrys post. I do think it is sculpted by Sykes, as he was known to do other makes than Rolls Royce. They look so much alike, but the only way to know for sure is original paperwork Sykes would have had. Another way would be to have originals side by side to compare in your hand, but that still would not be "court of law" proof, only authentic paperwork. Though, I may not be a "sporting" man, I'd bet on it being a Sykes design..........

in the 1990 edition of William C. Williams book Motoring Mascots of the World on page 199
This mascot is listed as Straker-Squire, 1921 , Numbered, brass, nickel-plated

so according to mister Williams this was a standard Straker-Squire fitted mascot.
if there were only 60 of these cars built and all mascots were numbered it would make sense to me if your mascot has a number between 1 and 60 ?

Hi, Interested to see another Straker mascot. They were used only on the 6 cylinder cars of which only some 60 were produced, so fairly scarce. I have seen reproductions available, but they lack the detail. Story was they were sculpted by Sykes, the Rolls mascot man, but doubtful given the ten years between the mascots. The Straker cap on which it sits is much larger than the Rolls. Regards Terry Parker
